Vision
The New Zealand Society for Sustainability Engineering and Science (NZSSES) is a Learned Society whose purpose is to advance sustainability engineering and science.
The Society adopts the Brundtland Report definition of sustainability as its core belief:
"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Objectives and Activities
As a Learned Society, the NZSSES seeks to promote:
- Research into the science and engineering underlying sustainability;
- Methods and tools for achieving sustainability; and
- The application of sustainability to professional practice, design and management.
The activities of the Society will include:
- Holding regular international conferences on sustainability engineering and science;
- Holding regular Forums throughout the year on sustainability issues focused on government, industry, consulting and research/education activities;
- Publishing research on sustainability engineering and science;
- Providing input into policy and debates on sustainability and its achievement.
Membership Fees:
Full membership: NZ$50 plus GST
Students and graduate members of IPENZ: NZ$30 plus GST
Plus any applicable IPENZ service fee (currently NZ$42.75 including GST).
The membership fee covers the financial year 1 October to 30 September .
Please note:
- Current members of IPENZ or other Technical Interest Group (e.g. Mechanical Engineering) are only levied the service fee once.
- There is no fee for joining NZSSES during the last six weeks of the financial year.
Membership Benefits
The feature event organised by the NZSSES is the bi-annual conference, which brings international thinking on sustainability issues to New Zealand, addressing the topics with a global perspective and from a multi-disciplinary viewpoint. Members can benefit greatly from being involved in this event.

- Discounted rates to all fee-paying short courses, workshops or seminars
